Focused. Determined. Ready to Keep Aircraft Flying.

From a young age, Jeff Sawyer was captivated by how complex machines work. What began as a simple curiosity about airplanes has evolved into a full-fledged passion for aviation maintenance. Today, through the Double M Foundation’s internship program with the Lakeland Aero Club, Jeff is turning that passion into hands-on experience that will shape his career in aviation.

Inspiration and Discovery

“I’ve always been fascinated by how things work, especially complex machines like aircraft,” Jeff shared. At first, his interest was about airplanes in general, but as he learned more, he became drawn to the challenge of maintaining and troubleshooting them. Over time, his goals shifted from wanting to understand aviation to wanting to play a direct role in keeping aircraft flying safely.

Jeff first heard about the internship program through Mike Z. and other members of the aviation community. The promise of hands-on opportunities immediately stood out. “After looking into it and learning

about the experiences available, I knew it was something I had to apply for,” he explained.

Hands-On Growth

It gave him the chance to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, using tools and techniques he had only studied before. “It was rewarding because I could see the direct impact of the work on the safety and performance of the aircraft,” he said.

Throughout the internship, Jeff’s primary responsibility was helping maintain aircraft and ensuring they stayed safe and airworthy.

Like many interns, Jeff faced challenges as he transitioned from the classroom to the hangar floor. The hardest part? Learning to diagnose problems without having immediate answers. “At first, it was frustrating, but I learned to break problems down step-by-step, ask the right questions, and rely on the team’s experience,” he reflected. This process made him more resourceful, patient, and confident.

During his time at the Lakeland Aero Club, Jeff has developed both technical skills and personal habits. He notes that he’s become more organized and has gained confidence in diagnosing and repairing complex issues. These lessons are ones he plans to carry into his future career.

Looking Ahead

Jeff’s next step is to test for and receive his Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license. From there, he hopes to build a career in aviation maintenance, whether in general aviation or with the airlines.

Jeff encourages anyone considering the program to embrace every opportunity. “Stay focused and learn everything there is to learn. Don’t get too focused on one fixed type of job. Learn all there is to know in the maintenance world.”
